Common questions

What does the Debt Check show?

Your total debt, what it costs each month, your debt-free date and which options realistically fit. Options are ordered by fit, then by how little each one asks you to give up, and a nonprofit option is always included.

How is my debt-free date worked out?

From the balances, rates and minimums you enter. It pays your minimums plus the extra amount you choose each month, highest rate first, and counts the months until every balance is paid.

What if my budget doesn't pay the debt off?

The Debt Check says so. When the interest outpaces your payments it shows that you won't be debt-free on this budget, and the options it lists include ways to lower your rates or payments.

Which options can the Debt Check suggest?

Paying it off yourself with a plan, a consolidation loan, nonprofit credit counseling, debt settlement and talking to a bankruptcy attorney, plus tax debt options and your rights with collectors when they apply. Each option shows when it's a good fit and what to watch out for.

Do I need to sign up, and is my information sent anywhere?

No sign-up. Nothing is sent anywhere: your numbers are saved only in this browser, and every tool on the site reuses them.

Is the Debt Check financial advice?

No. Results are estimates based on the numbers you enter and the assumptions shown. They are not financial, tax or legal advice, so talk to a qualified professional about your situation.
