How this works
- Utilization is your card balances divided by your credit limits.
- Overall utilization adds up every card with a limit; each card's is its balance over its own limit.
- The pay-down amount is the balance above your target share of the limit.
- The default target is 30%: the CFPB notes that experts advise keeping your use of credit at no more than 30 percent of your total credit limit.
- It doesn't estimate your credit score. Credit limits you enter are saved with your debts in this browser.

Common questions
What is credit utilization?
The share of your available card credit you're using: your balances divided by your credit limits, overall and for each card.
What utilization should I aim for?
The CFPB says experts advise keeping your use of credit at no more than 30 percent of your total credit limit.
Should I look at overall or per-card utilization?
The calculator shows both. Getting every card down to your target on its own can take more than reaching the target overall.
